Twitter Design Community, I salute thee!

April 9th, 2009

The Twitter Design Community; words can not describe what greatness these guys bring to my day.  Working as a freelancer, from home, I would say the only thing I miss is the office chatter.  The funny things people say, the great stuff they help you out with and mostly that social side of life that can easily be lost in freelance work.

Twitter is my office chatter.  Maybe I tweet too much, maybe I use it incorrectly – I dunno… Without it my motivation would have taken a large hit. Read the rest of this entry »

New Tutorial: CSS Positioning Explained!

April 7th, 2009

I have done my first guest tutorial for new tutorial site www.tutshelf.com.  This tutorial covers CSS Positioning and explains the 4 different positions available and how they work.  It goes into detailed explanation of Absolute positioning and hopefully will help you understand a little better, if you don’t already.

If you enjoy my tutorial and you would like to see my writing style again (I doubt it lol), give me a topic, and I will see what I can do.

Enjoy!

jQuery – Beginners Guide

January 19th, 2009

Well I did say before Christmas that I was going to do this… It has taken a long time for many reasons, mainly because of the holidays and the fact that I have had a few jobs on the go.   So for those who care, my apologies.

Following on from the above, I’m now going to almost get out of writing a beginners guide to jQuery.  Why?  Because I have found one of the best resources that I have seen yet.

Thanks to the guys at Theme Forest, from that “small” network of sites by Envanto (who seem to be slowly taking over the design community) for this awesome 15 part video tutorial to kick start you into your jQuery Career! (Links below)

My goal next is to try and get some project tutorials up,  so hopefully as I make something I can pass on the knowledge goodness!

Other news:  I have decided to split up my sign/vinyl making and Websites/graphics – So there should be a new site emerging soon that will house all of my digital services.  You will be able to find it here

Holidays are over!

January 6th, 2009

Thank goodness the kids went back to school today; they are a distraction… maybe now I can get down to writing this first jQuery blog! Christmas is a strange time of year, we don’t celebrate it but it still seems to make you loose track of time. Why is it that no one knows what day it is during Christmas… Crazy.

Ahh well, its all over and we can get on with things again! :D

Learn jQuery With Me!

December 19th, 2008

jQuery logo

I am starting on the wonderful road to becoming enlightened with jQuery.  What I have decided to do is create a semi regular post, describing what I have learnt and explaining how to do things as I learn them.  Hopefully this should help some of you guys if you want to start to learn.

Why jQuery?  Well it’s like a light weight JavaScript.  I have always wanted to learn a good strong design scripting language that would help me develop my web building skills.  jQuery will give me the scripting experience to then go on and learn more languages like it.  jQuery also has a familiar way of selecting objects to manipulate, using CSS ID’s and Class’ which is great for someone like me!

As they say, who ever “they” are, “Stay tuned folks” and in the next few days you should see the appearance of my first jQuery tutorial style blog post.

Coldest Nov/Dec in Manchester that I can remember…

December 17th, 2008

Its freezing, and its been freezing for ages… We don’t normally get this in December in Manchester at least.  Normally its about 10C, wet, but at least a little warm.  For the past month now it’s been mostly around the 4C mark, frosty almost every morning and we have even had snow.  Actually pretty much the whole country saw some of the white stuff.  Plus fitting vinyl in a cold cold Manchester city centre isn’t good for the soul…

With the cost of energy prices and the fact that our heating is about as good as a candle heating a barn in a -20C hurricane, I fear our bill is going to be quite large.  Hopefully the recent energy regulator stuff will calm the prices down a little; well at least I hope so.

CSS Block Elements Explained

December 15th, 2008

CSS Block Elements

There has been an increasing amount of DIV’s being used these days, I know I used to be one of those who used them a little too often too.  But why do we use DIV’s so much?  A DIV element is a brilliant way of piecing together your site, helping you realise your layout dreams.  So why am I speaking like a mad man? Why am I claiming DIV’s are used too much?

Because they are!
